Two families left the Gorna Kamionka "posiolek" labour camp in the Omsk Oblast of Siberia in the summer of 1942: the Pola family and the Sokolowski family. The men joined the Polish army while the women and children spent the remainder of the war in refugee camps in India, Pakistan and Africa.

The families were able to reunite in England after the war. Some of the family members stayed put while others emigrated to Canada and the United States.
