The Frontier Defense Corps
The Frontier Defense Corps (Korpus Ochrony Pogranicza - KOP) was formed in 1924 to
guard against the Soviet threat following the demobilization of the emergency army units after the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-20.
The soldiers were mostly ethnic Poles, specially selected and specifically trained.
Throughout the interwar period they maintained a high state of readiness and often engaged in skirmishes against Soviet border
incursions. They also participated in pacification campaigns against Ukrainian Nationalists.
At the outbreak of war in 1939, KOP units mobilized against the
German threat leaving a token presence spread out along the eastern frontier. Despite often courageous resistance these units
were overwhelmed by the 7 armies leading the Soviet Invasion on September 17th.

National Guard Units
(Obrona Narodowa)
Created in December 1936, this force consisted of about 1,600 officers and 50,000
men and was intended to be an organization of Polish volunteers suitable for paramilitary duties. By March 1937, the Guard
was taken over by the infantry branch of the armed forces. Some of the men were fully trained and some were partially trained
including those surplus to the draft quotas, and volunteers not yet subject to the draft.
Most battalions were under strength and were short of artillery and automatic weapons.
Despite this the units fought well when properly led because they contained a high proportion of volunteers who often wound
up defending their home regions.

6. Losses Sustained During the September
(1939) Campaign
Source # 1: The Polish Campaign 1939, Zaloga and Madej Hippocrene,
New York, 1985
Polish:
-
66,300 troops killed.
-
133,700 troops wounded.
-
587,000 troops taken prisoner by the Germans.
-
200,000 troops taken prisoner by the Soviets.
-
*Equipment losses - almost total except for the small amounts of equipment which accompanied some 100,000
troops which escaped into Romania, Hungary and the Baltic States.
-
Great civilian losses including 40,000 dead in Warsaw alone. The invasion was immediately followed by the
mass executions of thousands more in the immediate post-battle period.
* N.B. - although the Germans could not make use of the Polish guns and ammunition for their own purposes,
they did pass them along to their satellite armies. One exception to this was the Polish 7.92mm Kb ppanc wz. 35 "Ur" antitank
rifle, a secret weapon developed by the Poles just as the war broke out. Only 3,500 were produced. The rifle was remarkable
in that it was light-weight, operated like a regular bolt-action rifle but was capable of penetrating most German armour
of the time and it proved effective in 1939. The key was its revolutionary tungsten-carbide-core SC round which was later
successfully copied by the Germans for tank rounds. As befits a secret weapon, the units were kept sealed in boxes marked
"Rifles for Uruguay" until they were issued and put into use.
German:
-
16,000 troops killed.
-
32,000 troops wounded.
-
674 tanks lost (1/4 of those committed - 4th Panzer Div lost 81).
-
319 armoured cars, 195 guns and mortars, 6046 trucks and 5538 motorcycles lost.
Soviet:
Source #2: Poland: An Illustrated History, Iwo Cyprian Pogonowski, Hippocrene
Books, New York, 2000.
-
Pogonowski lists the same figures as above for Polish and German dead and wounded however he uses a figure
of 452,536 for Polish POWs taken by the Soviets. This figure is based on German and Soviet official statements which
put the number of Polish POWs captured during the 1939 campaign at 1,040,000.
Source #3: German Sources (as quoted in The German Campaign
in Poland (1939), Mjr. R. Kennedy, Department of the (U.S.) Army Pamphlet # 20-255, Washington D.C., 1956)
Polish:
-
694,000 troops captured by the Germans.
-
3,214 field pieces, 16,500 machine guns, 1,700 mortars and enormous quantities of small arms and ammunition.
German:
-
8,082 officers and men killed.
-
27,278 officers and men wounded.
-
5,029 officers and men missing (many of whom had been POWs of the Poles and were later recovered).
-
217 tanks destroyed, including 89 Mark I, 83 Mark II, 26 Mark III, and 19 Mark IV.
-
Over 400 aircraft destroyed (according to neutral sources).
N.B. "Some three-quarters of a million of the Polish population were ethnic Germans and therefore available
for military service for the Reich. Some of the other minorities, such as the Ukrainians, were not opposed to cooperation
and service with the Germans."
